As India approaches August 15, the nation prepares to celebrate its 78th Independence Day. This day marks the historic moment in 1947 when India achieved freedom from British colonial rule after a prolonged struggle. It is a time to honour the sacrifices of the freedom fighters who fought tirelessly for the country's independence.

Independence Day is celebrated with great enthusiasm across the nation. Iconic buildings and institutions are adorned with the tricolor lights, symbolising the national flag. The celebrations are marked by a sense of patriotism and pride, as citizens reflect on the nation's journey towards freedom and the progress made since.

There have always been doubts circulating around the count of Independence Days celebrated. The discussion hinges on whether the count should begin on August 15, 1947, the day of independence, or a year later. By counting from the actual day of independence, this year marks the 78th anniversary. However, if counted from the first anniversary in 1948, it would be the 77th Independence Day. According to the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the government celebrated the 77th Independence Day in 2023, making this year the 78th.

The Red Fort in Delhi remains the focal point of Independence Day celebrations. It was from this historic site that India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, delivered the iconic 'Tryst With Destiny' speech, declaring India's independence. This tradition has continued, with the Prime Minister addressing the nation from the Red Fort every year.
