No Extension Expected: ITR Filing Deadline Remains July 31, Here's Why
ITR Filing Last Date: July 31 deadline approaching, no extension announced. Know the consequences of missing the deadline and the documents required to file ITR
ITR Filing Last Date: The deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) is July 31, and an extension appears improbable at this point, as no official announcement has been made by the finance ministry. Despite growing speculation and a noticeable increase in filings as the deadline nears, the Income Tax Department has not confirmed any extension.
The Income Tax Department has reminded taxpayers on X: "Do remember to file your ITR if you haven’t already. The due date to file ITR for AY 2024-25 is July 31, 2024."
Can You File ITR After July 31?
You can still file your tax return even if you missed the deadline but with a late fee. This is called filing a belated return. The last date to file a belated return for the financial year 2023-24 (assessment year 2024-25) is December 31, 2024.
Missing the ITR filing deadline can lead to several consequences. Taxpayers may face a late fee ranging from ₹1,000 to ₹10,000. Additionally, interest will be charged on any unpaid taxes, further increasing the total amount due. Furthermore, a penalty of up to ₹10,000 may also be imposed, adding to the financial burden for those who do not file on time.
Here the list of documents required to file ITR:
- PAN card
- Aadhaar card
- Form 16 (for salaried individuals)
- Form 26AS (for tax deducted at source)
- Bank statements and interest certificates
- Investment proofs (for deductions)
