Ranchi: A sub-inspector posted at special crime branch in Ranchi was shot dead by an unidentified assailant, police said on Saturday.

The deceased policeman has been identified as Anupam Kachhap, a 2018 batch sub-inspector. His body was recovered from near Ring road in Ranchi.

The reason behind the murder is not known yet. His body was found lying in a motionless state near Boreya road which falls under the jurisdiction of Kanke police station.

SIT Formed to Probe Matter

A special investigation team has been formed to investigate the matter.

Acording to Ranchi SSP Chandan Kumar Sinha, last night, Kachhap was out with his colleague-batchmate for dinner and he was killed on his way back.

SSP Sinha said, "Last night, Sub Inspector Anup Kachhap, who was posted in Special Branch Headquarters, was shot dead by some unknown criminal. We have taken the version of his colleague-batchmate, Pawan Kumar. They had gone to a line hotel for dinner. After dinner, others returned towards Kanke but the Sub Inspector who was murdered was going in the other direction."

"Why he went in that direction and how things happened are being investigated by the SIT. It seems he was shot from a point-blank range. SIT has been formed under the leadership of Rural SP Sumit Agarwal and all important officers in charge have been deputed for that, he added."

His body has been sent to RIMS Hospital in the city for postmortem.

Police have launched an investigation into the matter. Many locals were also questioned in connection with the murder. Cops were also scanning the CCTV installed in the area to find any significant lead.

Marandi Hits Out at Soren for Law Situation in state.

Soon after the incident came to light, BJP's Jharkhand unit chief Babulal Marandi visited RIMS and met the kin of victims. He also lashed out at the Hemant Soren-led government over ‘deteriorating law and order’ in the state.

He also alleged that Soren govt has surrendered before criminals who are targeting cops and lawyers in broad daylight.

“For his selfish interests, the Chief @HemantSorenJMM has handed over even the capital Ranchi to incompetent officers and has put it on a powder keg. Despite the alleged tight security in the capital Ranchi, criminals are fearlessly killing lawyers, police and even the owners of big establishments in broad daylight. How can the common people expect safety from the Hemant government which has surrendered before the criminals?,” Marandi wrote on X in Hindi.

More details are awaited.
