JIRIBAM, Manipur- The swift and effective handling of Jiribam's crisis by Security Forces amid Manipur's broader unrest has garnered widespread appreciation. This highlights the professional and strategic role of the Assam Rifles. Recent clashes in Jiribam have shifted national focus back to the troubled state.

The evolving dynamics in the region have brought to light the significant challenges faced by security forces. The Armed Forces are grappling with ambiguous directives. Moreover, the impractical boundary alignments of notified and de-notified areas have further complicated the situation.

National Leaders Call for Decisive Action to Restore Peace in Manipur

The absence of clear guidelines has hampered operational effectiveness. This raises urgent questions about the administrative framework governing security operations in Manipur. On June 10, 2024, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat emphasized the need for strong, decisive action.

Home Minister Amit Shah echoed this sentiment. He convened a high-level meeting with the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and other top officials on June 17, 2024. These discussions indicate that the national leadership is prioritizing the resolution of the Manipur crisis.

Operationally, the recent mobilization of underground groups towards Jiribam has inadvertently weakened them. These groups, attempting to exploit the unrest, have scattered their limited resources. This disorganization marks a significant setback for the insurgents.

Public Sentiment Shifts Against Insurgents Amid Recent Clashes

The local population's reaction to the recent violence has been telling. Increasing frustration and a growing realization that they are being manipulated by underground groups have led to a shift in public sentiment. This change in attitude is crucial.

As local support for insurgents diminishes, it becomes harder for these groups to sustain their activities. Moreover, the focus on the drug trade, a major funding source for many insurgent groups, has intensified. Since the violence in Jiribam began on June 6, various agencies have seized narcotic substances worth more than Rs 300 crores.

Addressing this issue is vital for undercutting the financial lifelines of these factions. Concurrently, there is a renewed push to bring all warring factions to the negotiating table. Recognizing that dialogue is essential for long-term peace is a critical step forward.

Jiribam as a Turning Point in the Manipur Crisis

Amidst these developments, it is becoming increasingly clear that Jiribam may well be the turning point in the Manipur crisis. The events of June 6, 2024, are likely to be remembered as the beginning of the end of a prolonged conflict in the region. The strategic missteps of underground groups, the firm stance of national leadership, and the shifting public sentiment all point towards a new phase in Manipur’s journey towards peace.

As we move forward, it is imperative that the lessons from Jiribam guide future actions. The need for clear directives and practical boundary alignments for security operations cannot be overstated. Ensuring that security forces can operate effectively and without ambiguity is crucial for maintaining stability.

While the path ahead is fraught with challenges, the recent developments in Jiribam provide a glimmer of hope. The combined efforts of the security forces, national leadership, and local communities are creating the conditions necessary for lasting peace. Jiribam stands as a testament to resilience and strategic foresight, offering a blueprint for resolving conflicts in Manipur and beyond.
