Assam Floods Devastate Wildlife; More Heavy Rains Expected Until July 5, Says IMD

Assam on July 03 continued to grapple with a severe flood crisis. The floods have affected 11.50 lakh people across 23 districts. The floods have claimed 38 lives. Water level of major rivers, including Brahmaputra, is flowing above danger mark. The floods impacted not only residents but the wildlife in the state as well. 11 animals, mostly hog deer, drowned in floods in Kaziranga National Park. 65 other animals were rescued from the floodwaters. Of the 233 forest department camps in Eastern Assam Wildlife Division, 173 are inundated. A respite from heavy rains is not very likely for Assam any time soon. IMD has forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall in the state till July 5. The Regional Meteorological centre in Guwahati has issued an ‘orange alert’. Moderate rain is likely at most places, with isolated thunderstorms & lightning.
