Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's V-shaped vanki ring holds a significant place in her marital life given its link to the Bunt community in Mangalore, and the symbolization of protection, prosperity, and harmony. It's also been speculated that a female relative from the bride’s paternal house possibly gave it to her.

Aishwarya's ring linked to the Bunt community

Originating from the Bunt community in Mangalore, this traditional ring is a staple in South Indian weddings. Local residing in the coastal region of South Karnataka called Tulunadu are believed to be the descendants of the Nagavamsha lineage. These people worship snakes as Naga Dev. The vanki ring symbolises the Naga worshippers as the ring represents the raised head of a snake. The Bunt community believes that the ring dephers evil and unwanted obstacles while protecting the young bride or married women.

On the other hand, the vanki ring became a symbol of royalty when princesses from South India's royal families started wearing them. Princess from Tulunadu began their new journey, they would wear the vadungila, which would ward them off from evil eyes.

Why does Aishwarya never take off this ring?

The 1994 Miss World Pageant winner, who has done a great job in putting India on the global fashion scene, can always be spotted wearing the V-shaped diamond-decorated ring

The ring comes in different styles, from a thin gold v-shaped band to one studded with diamonds. It is a reminder of her loving family as she embarks on a new journey. Not just the Bunt community, many married women in South India wear the ring. Wearing the vadungila is like wearing a mangalsutra after marriage, as it signifies a woman’s marital status.
