How to identify fleas and ticks on your pets?

To detect fleas and ticks on dogs, look for several warning signs. Fleas often leave behind droppings, which appear as dark specks in the fur, and white eggs. Dogs may exhibit excessive licking or scratching and may develop scabs or hot spots on their skin.

For cats, using a fine-toothed flea comb can be particularly effective, especially around the neck, base of the tail, and belly. Fleas on cats might be seen as small, dark moving spots or their droppings, which resemble specks of dirt. Excessive scratching and hair loss are also indicators of the presence of fleas.

What are the treatments for fleas and ticks?

When it comes to treating fleas and ticks, it is essential to use safe methods for removal. Avoid using gasoline, nail polish, petroleum jelly, alcohol, or hot matches as these can push infected fluids back into the bite. Instead, cover your hands with gloves or tissue, grasp the tick with tweezers close to its head, and pull straight out without twisting or squeezing. Clean the bite area and your hands thoroughly.

Moreover, there are some oral treatments as well for dogs and cats including tablets that kill adult fleas within 30 minutes and are administered daily, while others are monthly and prevent flea eggs from hatching. Certain products begin killing fleas in as little as 30 minutes and provide a month of protection.

Skin-based treatments that apply to the pet's back are also effective, with some products targeting fleas and ticks and others focusing on fleas and their eggs. Ensure using products intended for your specific pet, as some treatments meant for dogs can be harmful to cats. It is suggested to take the advice of a vet or animal care expert to ensure the proper removal of fleas and ticks from pets. Following the correct dosage and instructions is vital, and consulting with your vet can help avoid common mistakes and ensure the safety and efficacy of the treatment.
