New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday moved to the Supreme Court, challenging the Jharkhand High Court's decision to grant bail to Chief Minister Hemant Soren. Calling the High Court’s order as “illegal”, the ED argued that the High Court's order in the land scam case requires the Supreme Court's intervention. The case pertains to a money laundering case linked to an alleged land scam.

Recently, the Jharkhand High Court granted bail to Hemant Soren in connection with a land scam case. This decision has been challenged by the ED, which claims that the High Court's ruling overlooked significant aspects of the case.

Hemant Soren is Accused in Land Scam Case

CM Hemant Soren is accused in a land scam case of financial misconduct and corruption. The ED has asserted that the evidence against Soren is strong and that his bail is unjustified. In its plea, the ED said that the High Court had "erred" in saying that there was no prima facie case against the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) chief.

Notably, Soren walked out of the Birsa Munda jail in Ranchi on June 28 after the High Court granted him bail in a money laundering case linked to a land scam.

The Supreme Court will soon hear the ED's petition challenging the bail order. The outcome will be crucial for Hemant Soren and could have a significant impact on Jharkhand's political scenario.

Meanwhile, after his release, former Jharkhand chief minister and JMM leader Champai Soren stepped down from his post. Hemant Soren then moved a confidence motion in the Assembly and became the Chief Minister again after winning the trust vote.

He was arrested on January 31 from the Ranchi Raj Bhavan, after he resigned as the chief minister.

Notably, over 25 people, including Soren, IAS officer and former Ranchi deputy commissioner Chhavi Ranjan, Bhanu Pratap Prasad and others were arrested by the ED in connection with the land scam earlier this year.

At the time of his arrest, Soren had denied the charges against him, saying the money laundering case was foisted against him by the BJP-led central government as part of a political vendetta.
