The monsoon season ushers in a refreshing change in weather, but it also heightens the risk of foodborne illnesses. High humidity and fluctuating temperatures create an ideal environment for bacteria, viruses, and fungi to thrive. Here are essential tips to ensure you and your family stay healthy during this season.

Hand hygiene and kitchen cleanliness

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before handling food. Regularly clean all kitchen surfaces, utensils, and cutting boards to avoid cross-contamination. Use separate chopping boards for vegetables and raw meats to further minimize risks.

Choosing quality ingredients

Opt for fresh, high-quality ingredients. Avoid purchasing pre-cut fruits and vegetables from street vendors as they are more prone to contamination. When buying meat, fish, and poultry, ensure they are fresh and stored at proper temperatures. Always inspect packaged foods for expiration dates and signs of spoilage.

Cooking thoroughly

Cooking food at the right temperature is essential to kill harmful bacteria and viruses. Ensure that meat, poultry, and seafood are cooked thoroughly. Avoid consuming raw or undercooked items. Use a food thermometer to check internal temperatures, ensuring they reach safe levels. For instance, poultry should be cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).

Proper food storage

Proper food storage is critical during the monsoon season. Refrigerate perishable items promptly and avoid leaving cooked food at room temperature for extended periods. Store leftovers in airtight containers and keep them in the refrigerator. Set your refrigerator to a temperature below 40°F (4°C) to prevent bacterial growth.

Safe hydration

Contaminated water is a common cause of foodborne illnesses during the monsoon. Drink only filtered or boiled water. Avoid ice cubes from unreliable sources and prefer homemade ice using purified water. Be cautious with beverages from street vendors, as their water quality may be questionable.
